Above-Ground vs. In-Ground Pool Removal: What's the Difference?

The difference comes down to what's in the ground. An above-ground pool sits on the surface; an in-ground pool is a permitted structure dug into your yard. That one fact drives everything about cost, permits, and how long it takes.

Above-ground removal: fast and simple

Taking down an above-ground pool is usually a same-day job. The crew drains it, dismantles the wall, liner, and any surrounding deck, hauls it all off, and rakes out the pad underneath. No excavation, and in most towns no municipal permit for the pool itself. Typical cost runs from a few hundred dollars to around $2,500, mostly depending on size and whether there's a deck to remove with it.

In-ground removal: a permitted excavation

An in-ground pool is a different animal. It's a permitted job pulled by a registered demolition contractor, it involves heavy equipment, and it comes in two flavors — a partial fill-in or a full removal with engineered backfill. Typical cost runs from about $4,000 to $16,000, and near the bay or the ocean the water table adds pumping and careful backfill. What about the deck and the hot tub?

Pools often come with a surround. An old deck around an above-ground pool comes off with it. A dead hot tub or spa nearby is a quick separate removal — disconnect the power, cut the shell into liftable pieces if needed, and haul it out.

Which do you have?

If you can walk up to the pool at ground level and it has a metal or resin wall, it's above-ground and it's a quick job. If it's set into the yard with a concrete or vinyl-lined shell, it's in-ground and it's a permitted excavation. Either way, all the figures here are typical ranges, not quotes.
