What the work involves
A chimney can be taken down to the roofline and the roof patched, or removed in full through the house and down to the footing. Either way it is careful, staged work: the crew protects the roof and interior, takes the masonry down in sections, and hauls the brick and block out. A permit is normally required.
A chimney comes down from the top, which means either staging or a machine with the reach to take it safely, and the roof has to be made weathertight the same day the stack goes. Where it passes through the structure, the framing and flashing repair is a separate trade and worth lining up before the demolition starts.
