The usual approach

Patios and walkways come out much like a driveway — broken up, sorted, and hauled off, with pavers or flagstone stacked for reuse if you want them. The exposed ground is raked and graded so the space is ready for whatever comes next.

Pavers and flags usually come up by hand or with a small machine, and the base course underneath is the part that decides the volume. Access is rarely the problem on this one; what to do with the ground afterwards usually is.
